Hallelujah! Just as we had given up all hope and the expectation of snow was all but present....IT SNOWED! Friday night we got our first glimpse of what might be a great snow run! Chris Ayars (Brutal) posted up the meeting location and we all planned to meet at the Roberts Gas Station on Highway 89A. Snow or no snow, we were wheelin! As we awoke, we were excited to see that we had a legitimate snow day! The roads were icy, so prior to departure, Russell (Taco) had to take Mandi to work. We all gathered at 8:30AM, locked in the hubs, and headed up 89A to the top of Mingus Mountain. Taco (Russell), his sister's family (Jessica, Dan & Justin), OnewhiteZJ (Andrew and his family), and Brutal (Chris & Mandi Ayars) were all present! We decided to spend the first part of the day heading down Mingus towards Cherry Road. There were lots of sledders at the top of Mingus; but four wheel drive, big tires and lockers allowed us to go where the snow was untouched! Once we got to the top, we broke out the sleds and hooked them to the back of Chris' jeep! Andrew and Russell lead the way, while Chris pulled multiple sleds behind his jeep. After multiple donuts in the snow and messing around on different side roads, we found a nice open area to have some lunch and kick back. Chris continued to pull the sleds up the main road and we all took turns. At one point, Russell, Chris and Andrew were being pulled on the sleds while Mandi Ayars sped up the main road. Russell was on one of the thinnest sleds and was struggling to hold on while the sled drug across multiple rocks; shredding the bottom of the sled away. Just as he yelled to Chris, "we better slow down or I think I'm gonna get hurt because my rear end is dragging off the back of the sled," he hit a basketball size rock which sent him into a ditch and almost knocked him out; busting off the back portion of the sled. He laid there for about 5 minutes until he realized his (rear end) was still attached and his ability to breath was re-established. After spitting out a little blood from biting his tongue in the accident, he limped back to the jeep...no more sledding for him! When we arrived back at the lunch area, we listened to some good ol' Christian music and enjoyed some snowball fights and conversation!
Around 1:00PM we decided to head back down the mountain for some hot chocolate at Chris and Mandi's house! We packed up the sleds and made plans for an afternoon run...after all we had to take advantage the snow! Russell went to pick up Mandi for work and we all reconvened at the Jack in the Box in Prescott. This time Silverbullet was able to attend along with his good friend Donavan! We took another quick snack/lunch break and headed up Senator Highway. This time we took a route which not many of us had ever traversed; a trail leading back down toWhite Spar Road. We headed down the road, Chris pulling sled and the rest of us enjoying the near perfect scenery. At one point we came across a man riding a quad who had decided to start a decent size fire in the middle of the road. We all waved as we went by and soon questioned his logic; considering the EXTREME FIRE RISK currently in Arizona. About a mile up the road, we saw the same guy go wizzing by us and realized there was a good chance the fire left burning. Sure enough, Brian and Andrew went back and the fire was fully engulfed. They put it out. We continued down the road and took turns sledding behind Brutal....well everyone but Russell...he was just fine sitting in a nice comfortable drivers seat. As we got towards White Spar Road, we came across a guy in a jeep with what appeared to be his girlfriend who had spun his Wrangler into a nice sized ditch. Silverbullet took the opportunity to pull him out and told him all about the club we had going. Around another bend, Russell found himself maneuvering Taco into a large ditch. Again, Silverbullet attained the recover duties! We all headed back into town and thanked our HIM for an awesome day without any major breaks or....well.....any Major injuries! That night, a few of us got together for dinner at Augies in Prescott Valley, where they were doing a fund raiser for volunteer fire fighters. What an awesome day!
